Tasting- Hess Select

Hess Select

Variety of grape: Chardonnay

Country of origin: USA

Region of origin: CA

Vintage year: 2023

Price: $12.99

Shop/wine critic/winery review of the wine: "Consistently good Chardonnay
Great Chardonnay for the price. Taste is very consistent. Full bodied with hints of pear, crisp and smooth finish." Taken from the website Total wine

Reference from Wine Folly text: From the text on page 96 talked about citrus and tropical fruit. Because I could taste notes of lemon and apple I was able to see what other flavors I was missing. This had a very fruitful flavorful aroma and you could smell notes of peaches but I could not taste any.

My personal review of the wine: This wine was very good and recommended to me by my mom. We both enjoyed this wine so much we went back and got another bottle at Kroger. She and I both agreed for the price of the wine it definitely is worth it. We both tasted notes of apple and lemon. She and I both like this wine because its not very sweet but has amazing flavors.

Tasting- Growers Reserve

Growers Reserve

Variety of grape: Sauvignon blanc

Country of origin: USA

Region of origin: CA

Vintage year: 2023

Price: $6.99

Shop/wine critic/winery review of the wine: "Awesome, affordable SB from TJ’s. I’m not typically a fan of Cali SB but this one was nice. I would def buy again." Taken from the website Vivino

Reference from Wine Folly text: From the text on page 165 and 166 it mentioned that sauvignon blanc can have flavors of gooseberry, honeydew, grapefruit, white peach and passion fruit. It is recommended to serve cold which I did not do but I think it would have tasted better if I were to do that.

My personal review of the wine: This was very so fun to try because a year ago I tried their chardonnay. This was a very good wine and I would 100% buy again. I drank this one wine with my dinner which was burgers and tater tots. It was very delicious and had a very neutral flavor. It wasn't overpowering and I liked how it tasted since I got a lot of pear flavoring. Insane that this is my last ever post for the wine class and I am graduating in May!! What a great class.

Tasting - Vino

Vino

Variety of grape: Merlot

Country of origin: Italy

Region of origin: Lazio

Vintage year: Unknown

Price: $17.99

Shop/wine critic/winery review of the wine: "Just as the name says, it is a sweet wine. It has a little bit of a fizz to it, much like a champagne. I, personally, prefer a sweet wine. It's one that I would recommend to a friend and will be ordering again soon." Website from Kosher wine

Reference from Wine Folly text: I was not able to find a specific page dedicated to Vino but I did find on page 185 to explain something that is similar to Vino. The sweetness level is similar to Vino in the sense of almond and toffee. Because of these sweet tastes resembling the Vino.

My personal review of the wine: This was very fun to try but boy I do not like sweet dessert wines at all. I thought it was very sweet and not for me. As much as I enjoyed trying new wines and different sweetness levels I think I will stick with the dry and less sweet wine.

Tasting - Lamarca

Lamarca

Variety of grape: Glera

Country of origin: Italy

Region of origin: Veneto

Vintage year: Unknown

Price: $16

Shop/wine critic/winery review of the wine: "A fragrant prosecco with aromatic red apples, apricots and zesty honeyed grapefruit. Balanced acidity to match the fruit sweetness. Honey notes persist and offer some ripe pear and yellow apple touches on the finish. Try this with a cheese platter and fresh figs. Enjoy!" from Natalie Maclean Wine Reviews

Reference from Wine Folly text: From the text on page 155 about prosecco it mentions flavors of apple. I think this prosecco is on the quality level prosecco doc. This means "basic quality prosecco made in 9 provinces from Veneto and Friuli-venezia Giulia regions" taken from the text of the book. I could definitely taste the apple flavors but could not taste pear.

My personal review of the wine: Ive always liked this Prosecco because of the flavors of apple and lemon. I prefer Prosecco with orange juice when drinking mimosas rather than Champagne. This wine was super yummy and very light to the taste but it also enhances the orange juice very well making it a perfect brunch drink.

Wine and cheese blog 2 - Katie Williams

As my second ever wine and cheese experience I was eager to try since I have done this before. My first ever wine and cheese experience was with friends and as much as it was fun to explore the different pairings together I liked how I could be in my own thoughts this time. I went ahead and chose Rebuttel chardonnay, Espiral white wine, and Zinfandel red wine. I was super eager to try these wines with some new grapes I have not yet had before. For my cheeses I chose the garlic and herb cheddar cheese, pub cheddar with horseradish, and muenster cheese. I was very excited to try the wines with a nicer cheeses and one not expensive cheese.

Rebuttel

Vintage year: 2023

Variety of grape: Chardonnay

Country of origin: USA

Region of origin: California

Price: $13.99

  • Smells: notes of beer and oak.

  • Flavor: First taste was like beer and then went to oak flavor. The after taste was very mellow and calming. I liked the oaky and smokey taste to it.

Espiral

Vintage year: Unknown

Variety of grape: Blend of Loureiro, Trajadura, and Arinto grapes

Country of origin: Portugal

Region of origin: Vinho Verde DOC

Price: $8.99

  • Smell: First smells were of citrus, grape and apple.

  • Flavor: Very dry but you can definitely tell the flavors of citrus and apple. I thought this white wine was very yummy especially served chilled.

Zinfandel

Vintage year: 2021

Variety of grape: Zinfandel and merlot

Country of origin: USA

Region of origin: Lodi, California

Price: $15.99

  • Smell: Cherry and berry and felt like I was about to drink cranberry juice.

  • Flavor: Very bitter taste and tasted like cranberry. I felt like it also had a bitter taste of tart cherry and pomegranate juice in it.

After tasting each of the wines I moved on to tasting each of the cheeses. First I tried each of the cheeses and enjoyed the flavors of each of them and the different textures. The second step was to try the cheese paired with the wine which it always an interesting surprise. I liked how this second blog I felt like I had a bit more control since I was doing it alone. Lastly, I wrote down all the notes and flavors I tried and moved on to the next wine. Below I wrote down each of the cheeses and what I thought paired with the wine.

Herb Garlic cheddar cheese

  • Flavor: One of my favorite cheeses with the seasonings and flavors on it. The cheddar has a tang with the herb and garlic gives it smoothness.

  • Pub Cheese cheddar with horseradish

  • Flavor: Super yummy with the horseradish as an extra spice and creamy cheese texture. I was excited to try this cheese with wine to see how the spicy horseradish reacted with the wine.

  • Muenster

  • Flavor: Bland flavor and has a super smooth texture. I use this a lot on sandwiches and grilled cheeses because its very good when melted.

After trying each of the wines I paired each of them with the cheeses and wrote my thoughts below.

Rebuttel

Herb garlic cheddar cheese: Really liked the creamy texture of the cheddar cheese and it complemented the oaky and smokey wine. The cheese was smooth but had a super rich texture. The flavor of the garlic and herb complemented the wine very well.

Pub cheese: I didn't really enjoy the flavors together for this wine. I felt like the oak and horseradish clashed together and the flavor wasn't balanced at all.

Muenster: The wine paired with cheese didn't amaze me. I felt like the wine really over powered the cheese and it was too much of the oaky flavor. The cheese doesn't have a super strong flavor where as the wine did.

Espiral

Herb garlic cheddar cheese: My absolute favorite pairing together! The flavors of herb garlic really shined and the wine complemented it so well. I felt like the flavors really balanced each other out very well.

Pub cheese: The white wine and pub spicy cheese surprising went really well together. I think because this wine was chilled it balanced out the spicy horseradish. The citrus in the wine was very interesting with these flavors but regardless it was definitely a good refreshing kick!

Muenster: The flavors balanced each other out very well but the flavors could have been better. It felt like the wine was still super overpowering and the cheese could have shown through a bit more. I cant really describe the flavor well because it was just very overpowering with the wine.

Zinfandel

Herb garlic cheddar cheese: I liked the pairing of the wine and cheese together. It felt like I was biting into cheese and a berry at the same time. The flavors matched each other very well and they have great textures.

Pub cheese: Really liked the cheese and wine paired together. The bitterness of the wine with the cranberry tasted paired with the creamy pub cheese with the spice of horseradish. They both balanced each other out very well.

Muenster: This cheese and wine pairing wasn't my favorite since the muenster has such a bland flavor. It kind of had a nail polish taste to it but I am assuming thats what you get when you use slice cheese thats not very expensive. Super cool to try anyways though!

To conclude, I really enjoyed trying each of these wines with the cheeses. A lot of unique flavors I was not expecting to try and was glad I could pair so many tastes. I liked trying these new wines because I dont usually try red wines and white wines I more go on my safe route with Chardonnay. Usually when I drink wine with cheese its one wine paired with multiple cheeses so its cool to have tried it this way!
